Another milestone reached in my Diploma in Integrative Counselling… Module 2 is complete!
This module has focused on Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), which has been a very different experience from our earlier work with Person-Centred Therapy.
I've enjoyed exploring a different way of working, particularly the focus on identifying strengths, recognising what's already working and helping clients consider what they would like to change. It's given me plenty to think about and has helped me appreciate how different therapeutic approaches can offer different perspectives.
I'm still learning, of course, but that's what makes this journey interesting. Each module brings something new, challenges the way I think and gives me more to reflect on as I develop my counselling skills.
But completing Module 2 isn't the only milestone I've reached recently.
Following an observation of my triad work by my tutor, I've now been signed off as ready to work with clients in a placement setting.
That's a big step forward.
Since starting the course back in April, much of my time has been spent learning theory, practising skills with fellow students and reflecting on how I respond to others. Our triad sessions have been particularly valuable, giving me the opportunity to put what we've been learning into practice, receive feedback and build confidence in my developing skills.
Having my tutor observe my work and confirm that I'm ready to move forward makes the next stage feel much closer.
Of course, being signed off doesn't mean I've suddenly got everything figured out. Far from it. I still have plenty to learn, and I expect that working with real clients will bring new challenges, questions and opportunities to develop.
That's exactly why the placement stage matters.
My next step is to find a suitable placement where I can begin gaining experience with clients, continue developing my skills and learn through practice with appropriate supervision.
I'm excited about the prospect, although I'm sure there'll be a few nerves along the way.
When I first walked into that classroom in April, becoming ready for placement felt a long way off. Now, I've completed two modules, explored different ways of working and reached a point where I can begin looking for that opportunity.
There's still a long way to go before I qualify, but it's worth taking a moment to recognise how far I've come.
Module 2 complete. Signed off for placement.
One more milestone reached… and another chapter about to begin.
